Heritage

PowwowSitting Bull, Lewis and Clark, Sakakawea, Gen. George Custer, Teddy Roosevelt. This historic cast helped shape the region, along with every Native American, trapper, cowboy and farmer who has since spent part of his or her life on the Dakota prairies.

The North Dakota Badlands in the 1880s was a colorful place to live. Ranchers like Pierre Wibaux and Gregor Lang attempted to create a cattle industry. The Marquis de Mores, a French nobleman, was one of the most exotic inhabitants. He and his wife Medora, established their residence at a western mansion, the Chateau de Mores. The Chateau still stands on the butte above the Little Missouri River in Medora.

RodeoToday you can step back in history and attend a rodeo, powwow or trail ride. Many of the Dakota West Adventures members will encourage you to cowboy up and try a variety of ranch experiences from branding to herding cattle to watching the stars around a campfire as you listen to cowboy poetry or listen to an Indian drum.
